Rest for the Weary

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the ability to rest, and to rest in Him. It can be difficult to believe that God created the Sabbath for man, and not man for the Sabbath, but He knew we would need seasons of stillness. He too rested on the seventh day, reflecting on everything He had made.
When we try to keep up with every task, every person, and every demand, burnout becomes inevitable. The feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, and exhausted will wreak havoc on our minds and bodies. We were not created to live without boundaries. Even Jesus stepped away from the crowds to be alone with the Father.
We have forgotten that health is the real wealth, and that time is currency we can never get back.
I have watched many people spend their lives in busyness, so consumed by it that they lose sight of God, themselves, and their families, until they reach the point where they can no longer function. I have been there myself. I subjected myself to the exhausting cycle of constantly chasing, constantly keeping up, until I eventually short-circuited under the weight of it all.
Losing my mother was the rude awakening I needed. It was the ultimate reality check, a reminder that there are things far more precious than the grind. That there are things we cannot recover by working harder or moving faster. It brought me to a place of honest inventory: how am I spending my days? Am I making time to be present with the Lord? Am I present with the people who matter most?
Life is not promised to any of us. Today is a gift.
I encourage you to take a step back. Give rest to your mind, your body, and your spirit. You were not meant to do it all, and certainly not all at once. I understand that life carries real pressure. That making ends meet can feel like an endless, unrelenting demand. But we are human beings, not human doings, and we must set boundaries for ourselves before the weight sets them for us.
If you are not making time to be in God's presence, to live and to be present in your own life, you are way too busy.
Spend time with the Lord. Let Him strengthen and replenish you. He is not asking you to have it all together. He is asking you to come.

Where in your life have you been running on empty?
What would it look like to truly rest in God this week?
Who or what are you neglecting because of busyness?
