Don't Be Deceived: Knowing God Is Your Greatest Defense

"Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray." — Mark 13:6

There is something I need to say plainly, because I believe it matters more right now than it ever has.

People are hungry. Hungry for hope, for answers, for something that feels like peace in a world that will not stop spinning. And into that hunger, many voices have stepped forward. Some speak His name. Some wear the language of the faith. Some even quote Scripture. But not all of them are sent by God.

This is not new. Jesus warned us about it Himself.

In Matthew 7:15, He said: "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." And in Matthew 24:24: "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect."

This is not a message of fear. It is a message of preparation.

The Word Will Be Weaponized

One of the most sobering realities of our time is this: the name of Jesus will be used against the very people He came to save.

Not by people who openly reject Him. By people who profess Him.

The enemy is not always loud. He does not always show up looking like opposition. Sometimes he shows up looking like ministry. Sometimes he shows up sounding like truth, using the right words, the right tone, and just enough Scripture to make you question what you already know. His goal is not always to make you deny God outright. Sometimes it is simply to make you doubt. To make you wonder. To wear you down until you let go of what you know to be true because someone else's version of God seemed more convincing in the moment.

Paul warned about this in 2 Corinthians 11:14: "And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."

Deception rarely announces itself. That is what makes it deception.

Relationship Is Your Foundation

So how do you know? How do you tell the difference?

You know God.

Not just about Him. Not just facts and theology. You know Him. His character. His voice. His ways. The fruit of the Spirit that marks every true work of His hand.

Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a clear picture of what the Spirit of God actually produces in a life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When something claims to be from God but produces fear, control, shame, division, or confusion, that fruit tells you something. You do not need to argue with it. You do not need to explain it. You simply know it does not match who He is.

John 10:27 says: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

You can only recognize a voice you have spent time with.

This is why relationship matters. Not religion. Not routine. Relationship. When you know God, when you have sat with His word, prayed through His promises, and watched Him be faithful over and over again, you carry something that cannot be shaken by someone else's opinion of Him. You have firsthand knowledge. And firsthand knowledge is not easily displaced.

Do Not Let Them Move You

Someone will challenge your faith. Someone will come with a question designed to make you stumble. Someone will tell you that God is not who He says He is. That His word does not mean what it says. That your belief is naïve, or outdated, or harmful.

And when that happens, I want you to remember this: their perception of God does not define Him. Their misconception of His word does not change it. The truth of who He is does not shift based on who refuses to receive it.

Romans 3:4 puts it simply: "Let God be true, and every human being a liar."

You are not required to defend God at the expense of your peace. But you are called to remain rooted. Colossians 2:6-8 says: "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy."

Stay rooted. Stay in the word. When someone tries to hand you a version of God that does not line up with Scripture, you do not have to accept it.

For Those Who Are Sharing the Gospel

To every believer who is out there sharing the good news: I see you. And I want to encourage you not to grow weary.

You will meet resistance. You will encounter people who use Jesus as an argument against you. You will face moments where the church's failures are laid at your feet as evidence that God is not real or not good. Do not be discouraged. Do not let the misuse of His name cause you to shrink back from proclaiming it.

Galatians 6:9 says: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

You are not responsible for how people receive the word. You are responsible for planting it. Keep going. Stay grounded in His love. Let that love be the thing people encounter in you, because 1 Corinthians 13:8 reminds us: love never fails.

An Invitation

If you are reading this and you do not yet know God, this is for you too.

You may have encountered people who claimed to speak for Him and left you hurt, confused, or skeptical. That is real, and it is not something I want to dismiss. But I want to invite you to go to the source yourself.

Do not let someone else's experience with religion be the thing that keeps you from a relationship with God. Read His word for yourself. Pray and ask Him to make Himself known to you. He is not hiding. Isaiah 55:6 says: "Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near."

He is not who his misrepresenters say He is. He is better. He is faithful. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). And He will not turn away anyone who comes to Him genuinely seeking truth.

Know Him, and You Will Know the Difference

The greatest protection against deception is not suspicion. It is intimacy.

When you know God. When you know His word. When you know His character and what His Spirit actually produces in a life. You will know who He is. And you will know who He is not.

That knowing is not arrogance. It is wisdom. It is the fruit of time spent with Him. And it is available to every single one of us.

Stay in the word. Stay in relationship. Do not be swayed by every voice that speaks His name. Test what you hear against what you know of Him. And when someone tries to hand you a counterfeit, you will recognize it, not because you argued your way to clarity, but because you know the real thing.

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." — 2 Timothy 2:15
